About the Jurors

Lovie Olivia is an American multidisciplinary visual artist whose work centers on themes of gender, sexuality, race, class, and power. Working across printmaking, painting, fresco, digital and graphic design, as well as audiovisual and sculptural installation, Olivia brings together layered materials and processes to create deeply textured, immersive works. She is especially known for working on large wood panels built up with plaster and finished with fresco painting, blending traditional techniques with contemporary expression. Her practice is rooted in her lived experience and reflects the intersecting identities she inhabits as a Black, female, and queer artist.

Her work often explores the complexity of identity within underrepresented communities, drawing from personal narrative as well as cultural history. In her exhibition Thrice Removed, Olivia reimagined ideas of separation and belonging by examining the distance from African traditions, patriarchal structures, and heteronormative privilege. Combining elements such as recorded conversations, folklore, video, and archival materials, she creates space for both the beauty and tension of a hybrid identity. Through her richly layered visual language, Olivia challenges simplified narratives and invites viewers to engage with the depth, contradictions, and resilience within contemporary identity.
