Tour of MFAH Works on Paper Center

On January 10, 2018, VAA members and guests were given a unique opportunity for an overview of the collection of prints, drawings and photographs from across curatorial departments at the MFAH Works on Paper Study Center, Led by Jason Dibley, Collections Manager, Prints, Drawings, and Photographs, attendees were able to view new pieces that have not yet been on display.

In the museum, works and displays are rotated every three to six months. Then they are sent to storage for three to six years. Of the 12,000 -13,000 pieces in the collection, approximately 9000 of them are works on paper. Around 11,000 pieces are in storage, with another 1000 off site.

The works in storage are carefully catalogued and put in series of movable shelving units. Exposure to light is kept at a minimum. Works that are more delicate are put in the temperature control storage when the climate and temperature are monitored 24 / 7.
