    Writing the Artist Statement Workshop

    Join the VAA for “Writing the Artist Statement,” a hands-on workshop led by Erik Hagen in which you will learn the basics of writing the artist statement. In part one, we will cover the what, why, and how of writing the artist statement, what to avoid, and what to embrace. In the second part, we willl break into teams of two to work on your artist statements. Bring writing materials, whether that is a laptop or paper and pen depends on what you are most comfortable using.

    Erik Hagen is an artist in Houston. Since 2015, he’s been the vice president for the Visual Arts Alliance, a non-profit arts organization. He studied art and art history at Carleton College (BA) and won a post-graduate art residency at Carleton for one year. He has additional degrees in environmental engineering and water resources management from the University of Washington (BSCE, MSCE). He worked on environmental legislation in the corridors of Capital Hill in Washington DC, and was the “Drought Czar” managing water supply for the DC area. Communicating science to non-technical audiences is a passion throughout his career as a water resources engineer, policy analyst, and artist. In addition to an active studio practice, he enjoys taking his cats for walks around the block.
