Will Henry is a visionary artist based in Houston.  VAA will visit his studio, which is rarely open to the public. He and arts writer Garry Reece will discuss the current works Henry is readying for his next exhibition at the Galveston Arts Center in May. VAA members and guests will be the first to see these new paintings. The studio visit will be Saturday, Jan 4, 11:00 a.m., at Winter Street Studios, Studio 10, 2101 Winter St, Houston, TX 77007.

Will Henry says of his work, “The paintings have a strong sense of narrative and the landscape functions almost as a backdrop to the drama that unfolds. Growing up in a rural area the landscape really imprinted on my psyche and noticing a sense of sparseness of melancholy or loneliness.”

    Critiques

VAA critiques are opportunities for artists to share their work with other artists. These are peer critiques in which everyone is invited to show work and discuss the work of others. You don’t have to bring work in order to show up.

Work can be in any medium and artists may bring 1 to 10 pieces. Participants will be allowed as much time as possible depending on how many people are showing work.  Artists are encouraged to bring current pieces/projects they wish to discuss with others and get feedback on concept, technique, presentation, etc.

Drinks and snacks will be provided (feel free to bring and share, too).

VAA members and non-members are welcome to come. There is no fee.

Don't forget these events are now at Archway Gallery. Thanks to Archway for hosting!

Leslie and Brad Bucher Mandell Artspace

Designed as a private retreat and housing a major collection of contemporary and Latin American art, this converted plumbing supply warehouse is tucked away in Houston’s eclectic Montrose neighborhood. The collectors are strong supporters of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and in addition to an outstanding selection of modern and contemporary Latin American Art, have added a special balcony room focused on the works of alumni of the Museum’s Glassell Core Program. The collection tends towards minimalism and most pieces reflect a strong geometric component, including works by Kelly, Judd, de Kooning, Nevelson, and Eliasson and a strong Latin American emphasis with works by Soto, Cruz-Diez, Oticica, Kuitca, Crespin, Saraceno and Neto. Site specific installations by James Turrell, Soo Sunny Park and Henrique Oliviera round out the collection.
