Visual Arts Alliance had a record turnout for its October educational program. Thanks to a mention in the Houston Chronicle, the VAA Rice Art Walk attracted a crowd of over 120 attendees on October 7. The walking tour began and ended at James Turrell’s “Twilight Epiphany”, with four groups led by by VAA volunteers, including President Matt Adams, Programs Chair Nell Gottlieb, Program Captain Diane Gelman and James Turrell Skyspace Manager, Caroline Walker.
Rice University’s vast art collection was too expansive to cover in just one tour, however we were able to view and learn about many wonderful works which were graciously gifted to or commissioned by the school. We broke into four groups, gathered at James Turrell’s Twilight Epiphany.
We entered the Foyer of the Recreation and Wellness Center to view Aurora Robson’s bright “Lift.”
Moving to the Central Quadrangle of the university, we saw Jaume Piensa’s “Mirror,” which depicts a universal dialogue.
Those pre-registered went to the grand finale, the James Turrell “Twilight Epiphany,” gift of Suzanne Deal Booth, at the magic hour.
VAA’s November program will take place On Saturday, November 7 at 9:45 a.m., as we present an in-depth look at Houston artist Tara Conley’s 35-piece permanent collection of sculptures that are installed at the South Gessner Police Station, in District 17 at 8605 Westplace, 77071.
