Join Visual Arts Alliance Saturday, March  4, at 11:00 a.m. for an in-person event, a tour of the two-person exhibition at Anya Tish Gallery, Untamed/Unzoned. Ann Marie Nafziger and Lillian Warren will offer insights at the gallery, 4411 Montrose Blvd, Houston, TX 77006.

The paintings of Untamed/Unzoned explore public space, memory, geography, and otherwise overlooked aspects and details of our daily life. Marfa-based Ann Marie Nafziger deconstructs the natural landscape of West Texas to interpret one’s relationship with nature. “Experiences in wild and remote places – places far from human culture – are central to my artistic work. As humanity’s existence feels increasingly fraught, the paintings reflect my own parsing out of ideas, myths, and stories about the natural world and a desire to find a deeper respect for her power and intelligence,” says Nafziger, who received her BFA in Art and Communication from Goshen College, Goshen, IN and an MFA in Painting from The University of Houston, Houston, TX.

Lillian Warren’s constructed images of urban landscapes capture unusual yet familiar scenes to tell a story. “After a while I also began to paint works that are composites of different memories and places drawn from walks around my neighborhood. These are vaguely familiar, mundane spaces where no one would want to linger, in a slippery space between public and private, inhabited and abandoned,” says Warren. She received her BFA from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN, completed graduate courses in Art History from the University of Toulouse, France, and received an MBA from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN.
