Letter from the President

May, 2010

Dear VAA Members,

Our 27th Juried Open Exhibition is held at Williams Tower Gallery, 2800 Post Oak Blvd., Houston 77056, April 26 through May 28, 2010.  The opening reception is Thursday, April 29, 6:00 to 8:00 pm.  Awards will be presented at 7:00 pm.  Please try to attend and support your fellow artists.  There will be wine, soft drinks and hors d'oeuvres.

Many thanks to all of you who attended our April meeting at Lisa and Lee Littlefield's studios.  The Littlefields were gracious hosts and allowed us to view their extensive art collection inside their lovely home and sculpture pieces in the yard.  They led us to their large studios  behind the home.  They each have separate studio space and each shared their creative processes with us.  We had a large attendance and a wonderful visit.

Our Wednesday, May 5th meeting is being held at Foelber Pottery Gallery & Studio, 706 Richmond Ave., Houston, TX 77006.  713-529-1703. Meeting starts promptly at 6:30pm.

Foelber Pottery started in 1979 with a group of craftsmen making unique, intricately carved and pierced lanterns.  Each piece was created by a team of potters. One potter would throw the form on a potter's wheel. The next person would carve the design.  Another would apply the glaze colors. Then the next potter would load and fire the kiln.  The work sold at arts and crafts festivals in the southwest, from Texas to Florida.

In the 1980's, the studio gradually evolved and the potters turned the bottom floor of the 1930's house into a gallery.   They outgrew the house and built another building to make room for the growing pottery classes and studio/storage space for large "works-in progress".   They offer classes for adults and children and recently have added one-day Party Events for groups.  The gallery is still housed in the charming 1930's house where they host approximately five shows per year showing handcrafted, fine works in clay.

Hope to see all of you at Williams Tower Gallery and at Foelber Pottery.  Please mark your calendars with those dates.

Sincerely,

Ann McBride
