Simpson, Susan

my picture

As an abstract painter, I’m drawn to convey an experience with the natural environment through imagery and color. I developed my love of nature from growing up next to fields and woods; going on bird hikes and floating/camping trips with my family. My goal is to communicate nature’s life-enhancing energy and spontaneity and mystery.
I start with a concept, sometimes from childhood memories, and choose an evocative color palette. I like to work on the floor for a loose, gestural style. As the painting evolves with each layer surprises and unexpected directions occur.
I am influenced by artists such as Grace Hartigan, Frank Auerbach, and Louisa McElwain for their expressive marks, boldness, and movement.
